Boxing Star Ricky Hatton’s Cause of Death Ruled as Hanging

Ricky Hatton’s passing at his Manchester residence was deemed to have injuries “consistent with hanging” by a pathologist during an inquest. The cause of death was officially recorded as “hanging”, with no indications of suspicious circumstances surrounding the boxing star’s demise. Friends and family, including his son Campbell, attended the inquest proceedings at Stockport coroner’s court.

Among those present were long-time friend and manager Paul Speak, Ricky’s father Ray, brother Matthew, and former partner Jennifer Dooley. The former world champion was discovered at his £1.7 million home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on September 14 the previous year at the age of 46.

Paul Speak found him unresponsive at the property, having last been seen alive by family members on September 12. Concerns arose when he missed a scheduled event the next day, prompting Mr. Speak to visit his home on the morning of September 14 to escort him to Manchester Airport.

Senior coroner Alison Mutch, presiding over the inquest, highlighted that no suicide notes were found and that Hatton had made significant future plans, leading to a narrative verdict due to the uncertainty surrounding his intentions. The coroner cited Hatton’s alcohol influence and the presence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy as factors in her conclusion.

Hatton’s son, Campbell, expressed his belief that his father’s death was not premeditated and emphasized that the family perceived Hatton to be in a positive state before his passing. The inquest also revealed evidence of degenerative brain disease in Hatton, consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy associated with his boxing career.

The findings indicated no clear intention of suicide by Hatton at the time of his death, emphasizing his familial love and future aspirations. The inquest shed light on his final moments and the challenges he faced, including memory issues. Hatton’s family, deeply affected by the loss, mourned a beloved member and cherished his memory as a devoted family man and successful boxer.
