A recent caution has been issued for the large number of individuals using ibuprofen as a pain reliever for joint discomfort or arthritis. This medication is widely available without a prescription in various stores nationwide and is frequently prescribed in the UK. Ibuprofen falls under the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which function by diminishing inflammation, swelling, and pain, thereby temporarily enhancing comfort and mobility.
According to Anthony Paul Smith, a Musculoskeletal Postgraduate Lecturer at the University of Essex, while ibuprofen can alleviate symptoms, it does not target the fundamental joint changes linked to arthritis, such as cartilage degradation, bone alterations, and joint inflammation. Some individuals may become dependent on ibuprofen without exploring other pain management options like physical activity, weight loss, and physiotherapy, which are crucial for long-term joint well-being.
Anthony emphasized that easy accessibility to ibuprofen does not equate to safety, stating that many individuals assume its non-prescription availability implies low risk, which is not always the case. Prolonged use of ibuprofen poses risks of stomach irritation, potentially leading to ulcers and internal bleeding, especially at higher doses or among older individuals.
Additionally, ibuprofen can have adverse effects on the kidneys by impeding healthy blood flow necessary for their proper functioning. This can particularly impact dehydrated individuals, those with chronic kidney disease, or heart conditions. Long-term NSAID usage has been linked to elevated blood pressure, fluid retention, and heightened heart-related risks in certain patients.
Moreover, individuals with asthma need to be cautious as some may be sensitive to NSAIDs, potentially causing breathing difficulties. Combining ibuprofen with other medications like blood pressure or diabetes drugs can heighten the risk of complications or reduce the efficacy of other treatments.
While acknowledging that ibuprofen can be beneficial for short-term use at the lowest effective dose, Anthony stressed the importance of consulting a healthcare provider before long-term utilization. He recommended alternative approaches like exercise, weight management, and physiotherapy for managing pain, inflammation, and restricted movement, emphasizing the significance of a holistic approach to joint health and function.
