The victim of a stabbing incident in Belfast has emerged from an induced coma, but his family revealed concerns regarding potential loss of vision in his right eye. Stephen Ogilvie sustained severe injuries, including the loss of his left eye and deep cuts to his head, face, and back during the attack on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast.
Hadi Alodid, aged 30, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing and appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court. His next court appearance is scheduled via videolink on July 8.
Mr. Ogilvie’s family confirmed his recovery from the coma and expressed gratitude for the support received following the assault. However, they acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly the risk of vision loss in his right eye.
The family issued a statement expressing their profound appreciation for the outpouring of support from individuals, many of whom they have never met. Sudanese national Alodid entered Northern Ireland through the Irish border in February 2023 after traveling from Paris to Dublin and seeking asylum, subsequently granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028.
A video capturing the stabbing incident went viral, attracting attention from public figures like Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson, prompting calls for community action. The aftermath saw anti-immigration disturbances, including arson attacks on properties, vehicles, and a bus, as well as racially motivated assaults.
Law enforcement has made 35 arrests and charged 23 individuals in connection with the disorder. This remains a developing story. Stay informed about breaking news by accessing our updates through the provided link and joining our various platforms for the latest news content.
