Andy Burnham Primed for PM Role Amid Cabinet Reshuffle

Andy Burnham is set to promise economic growth and uphold Labour’s budget rules as he aims to enhance his financial credibility following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation, positioning himself as the likely successor at No 10.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester is anticipated to address fiscal policy next week after his return to Westminster as an MP following his Makerfield by-election victory.

Discussions are underway about a potential reshuffling of the Cabinet, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood being considered as potential replacements for Rachel Reeves as chancellor. However, Burnham’s allies clarified that no positions have been finalized as of Monday evening.

The path to the top job for Burnham appeared clearer as his main rival, former health secretary Wes Streeting, endorsed him to succeed Sir Keir. Meanwhile, Darren Jones is contemplating entering the race, potentially complicating Burnham’s prospects.

Sources close to the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister indicated he was hesitant to join the race but would seek assurances on economic policy to address concerns about market stability.

If Burnham secures the necessary support to stand as the sole candidate, he could become prime minister as early as mid-July. The current Prime Minister acknowledged losing the support of MPs and pledged a smooth transfer of power to his successor.

Keir announced plans to have a new leader in place by the time Parliament reconvenes on September 1, although the selection could occur sooner, with nominations closing on July 16.

Prospective candidates must secure backing from at least 81 Labour MPs by that date. Keir and his wife expressed gratitude to No 10 staff during a gathering in the garden.

Burnham acknowledged Sir Keir’s service to the country and emphasized the importance of moving forward positively during the transition period.
