Amanda Knox has announced her upcoming stand-up comedy performance at the Edinburgh Fringe, where she will share her experience of being wrongly imprisoned in connection with the murder of Meredith Kercher.
Kercher, a British exchange student, was tragically killed in Perugia, Italy, in 2007. Knox, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, faced accusations of murder and sexual assault in 2009. Despite their continuous claims of innocence, it wasn’t until 2015 that Italy’s highest court acquitted them of all charges.
Now, more than a decade later, the 39-year-old Knox, residing on Vashon-Maury Island in rural Washington with her family, is preparing to narrate her journey on stage. Initially planning a show about motherhood, Knox was encouraged by fellow comedians to address the controversial events that led to her notoriety.
Titled “Cartwheel,” her comedy act references an infamous story alleging she performed cartwheels at the police station following her friend’s death. Knox, in an interview with The Telegraph, expressed her belief that no topic should be off-limits in comedy, although she clarified her stance on avoiding jokes about Kercher’s death.
While acknowledging concerns from her loved ones about potential backlash, Knox highlighted her unblemished public image and stated her readiness to engage with Kercher’s family if approached. She emphasized her desire to establish communication with them, expressing her perspective on shared grief and the importance of telling her own story.
Knox believes her show, which delves into the complexities of womanhood with honesty and humor, would resonate with Kercher and the audience. Having previously recounted her ordeal through documentaries, TV dramas, and books, she continues to navigate the aftermath of a tragedy that marked both her and Kercher’s lives.
