Continuing for the fifth consecutive day, Russian drone assaults on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and its neighboring areas have persisted, causing incessant air raid sirens to disrupt the daily lives of millions.
The latest strikes on Monday resulted in injuries to four individuals and inflicted damage on warehouse facilities, an apartment complex, and a retail store in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko via Telegram.
Over the past few days, Kyiv and its vicinity have been under siege by swarms of drones, many of them equipped with jet engines, leading to casualties among residents, destruction of residences, and warehouses. A devastating Russian drone attack on an ammunition depot last Friday triggered explosions that claimed the lives of 38 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy remarked on Sunday that the relentless drone assaults were designed to exhaust the Ukrainian population. Zelenskiy revealed that Russia had launched close to 1,500 drones at Ukraine in just four days, with more than half of them being jet-powered.
Additionally, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by the private courier company Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, according to Governor Oleh Kiper on Monday. In the southeastern city of Kryvyi Rih, an industrial business was targeted in a jet-powered drone attack, resulting in injuries to two individuals, as confirmed by a local official on Monday.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated attacks in recent times, focusing on economic targets such as major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia has specifically targeted warehouses belonging to Ukraine’s leading supermarket chains, primary postal service provider, and home goods stores. In retaliation, Ukraine has also struck Russian infrastructure, with a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg being hit by a drone attack, as per the local governor.
Air raid sirens in Kyiv
Russia has increased its air offensive during the summer, taking advantage of Ukraine’s lack of interceptors capable of thwarting ballistic missiles. The frequent daytime drone attacks have disrupted life in Kyiv, leading to interruptions in the metro service and disrupting daily routines.
During the alert, numerous passengers in Kyiv were left waiting on packed platforms as train services across the Dnipro River were halted.
