At a recent fundraising event in Southampton, N.Y., U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared his views on the latest trade deal between the U.S. and Canada. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to show strength in negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, while acknowledging the supportive role played by his longtime friend, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, in advocating for Canada.
During the private event, Vance described Carney as a “very sweet guy” and emphasized his amicable relationship with him. However, Vance humorously pointed out Carney’s attempt to outdo Trump by asserting his toughness in the negotiations despite making concessions on various issues.
Vance highlighted the behind-the-scenes efforts of Jivani, referring to him as a “random MP” with a positive rapport with the U.S., who effectively advocated for Canada’s interests. He also dismissed Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre as a negligible figure in the trade negotiations.
The White House and Vance’s office have not yet commented on the matter. President Trump recently announced a temporary delay in imposing new tariffs on Canadian products, following discussions with Carney and intensive bilateral negotiations.
Reports indicate that the trade deal will involve the U.S. reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, with Canada agreeing to restore American alcohol sales. The specifics of the agreement, including the purported elimination of tariffs on American farmers, remain unclear.
Vance expressed the U.S.’ intention to influence Canada’s behavior through the trade deal, noting a shift towards a more Trump-like approach in Canada’s stance. He emphasized the significance of securing wins for the U.S. in the negotiations.
The relationship between Canada and the U.S. faced challenges after Trump’s re-election, marked by tariff impositions and annexation threats. Vance highlighted the involvement of U.S. officials, including Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, in negotiations with Canada, underscoring his increased engagement due to his connection with Jivani.
Jivani’s discreet involvement in the negotiations drew attention, with Vance commending his contributions in areas like energy and automobile tariffs. The longstanding friendship between Vance and Jivani, dating back to their time at Yale, has played a role in their collaboration on trade matters.
