U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce planned joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the need to support North Korea’s denuclearization and highlighting his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump expressed concerns over the cost and perceived hostility of the exercises towards North Korea. Despite acknowledging that it was too late to cancel the exercises, Trump instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the joint military drills.
This decision by Trump is not the first time he has attempted to halt such exercises, as he previously labeled them as “provocative.” South Korea’s Defence Ministry confirmed that the exercises commenced as scheduled on Monday. The South Korean presidential Blue House stated that they are evaluating Trump’s directive and expressed hope that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will facilitate meaningful dialogue for peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.
In response to Trump’s assertion that South Korea declined to assist in denuclearizing Iran, the South Korean government clarified that they are in discussions regarding potential military contributions while considering their defense readiness and domestic legal processes. The joint military training involving 18,000 South Korean troops was designed to enhance preparedness against North Korean threats.
North Korea, on the other hand, has criticized the U.S. and South Korea for their military drills, viewing them as a rehearsal for aggressive warfare. The North Korean regime has threatened unspecified strong actions against the two countries, accusing their joint exercises of escalating regional instability. North Korea has intensified its nuclear and missile activities since the breakdown of diplomatic talks with the U.S. in 2019, aiming to bolster its arsenal for future negotiations.
Trump, who met with Kim Jong-un multiple times during his presidency, has expressed interest in continuing discussions on North Korea’s nuclear program. The U.S. president’s decision to curtail military exercises with South Korea comes after he shared a photo standing alongside Kim, emphasizing their positive rapport despite outward appearances.
