Moroccan authorities detained over 100 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, following heightened security measures due to social media calls for another mass migrant crossing. This incident occurred after a previous surge of 72,000 migrants into Ceuta, which led to EU tensions and increased anti-immigration sentiments.
Among those arrested were 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens near Fnideq, a city across from Ceuta. Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse migrant groups near the border, while Spanish soldiers and police maintained a strong presence in Ceuta.
In response to the situation, Spain reinforced security with a maritime barrier and deployed additional police officers. The Interior Ministry confirmed that these measures would continue until stability is restored. Approximately 5,000 migrants remained in Ceuta, with some seeking shelter on the beach.
Authorities in Rabat had warned against a planned mass crossing, leading to heightened security near the border and reports of similar measures in Spain’s Melilla enclave. Efforts were made to prevent migrants in various Moroccan cities from reaching the border, although some managed to evade checkpoints.
In light of the challenges faced by migrants attempting to cross, individuals who had successfully entered Ceuta urged others not to follow suit, emphasizing the risks and lack of benefits. The orchestrated border crossings were described as planned events, with participants seeking safety in numbers.
