Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident occurred on Wednesday, and the police were notified after the children were taken to the nursing station of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation around 2 p.m. the same day.
Family members found the toddlers in a nearby lake and brought them to the nursing station with the help of First Nation safety officers. Despite efforts to save them, the boys were pronounced dead at the nursing station. Investigators believe the toddlers wandered away from their home and entered the lake, ruling out any foul play in the incident.
Anisininew Okimawin Grand Chief, Alex McDougall, expressed deep sorrow for the family and the community following the loss of the two young boys. The community is coming together to support the grieving family in this difficult time. Garden Hill, where the tragedy took place, is located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
The family had taken precautions by installing a fence to prevent direct access to the water, and McDougall mentioned that everyone is in shock and working to provide necessary resources and assistance to the family. This heartbreaking incident adds to the five drowning deaths reported in Manitoba in 2026, as confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
