Starbucks Rewards Program Updates: More Spending Required

Starbucks is making changes to its rewards program, requiring customers to spend more to earn free items. Customers earn ten stars for every £1 spent at Starbucks, accumulating these stars to redeem for free drinks or food. Starting from September 3, the number of stars needed for a free filter coffee, americano, or hot tea will increase from 130 to 150 stars. This change means customers will need to spend £15 to earn 150 stars instead of the previous £13 for 130 stars.

The required number of stars for bakery items like croissants, cookies, and muffins is also increasing from 300 to 350, with the spending threshold rising from £30 to £35. Additionally, to redeem a free handcrafted beverage such as lattes, mochas, matchas, and frappuccinos, the star requirement will rise from 500 to 600 stars, translating to a spending increase from £50 to £60.

For selected merchandise like mugs and cups, the star level is going up from 1,000 to 1,150 stars, resulting in the spend level for this reward rising from £100 to £115. Starbucks communicated to customers via email that these adjustments are aimed at ensuring the rewards program remains valuable and that more member benefits are on the horizon.

The criteria for achieving “Gold Level” membership, earned at 2,500 stars (equivalent to a £250 spend), remains the same. Gold members enjoy additional perks, including a free birthday drink, which can be tracked through the Starbucks app. A Starbucks spokesperson clarified that while the number of stars required for certain rewards is increasing from September 3, there will be no changes to how stars are earned, existing balances, or Gold Member qualifications. The company is committed to enhancing the rewards program and introducing more benefits in the future.

In other news, Starbucks is introducing its popular Unicorn Frappuccino to the UK for a limited time. This vibrant drink features peach and mango flavors with a blue raspberry drizzle, topped with whipped cream and colorful sprinkles. Available from August 15 to 17, the Unicorn Frappuccino starts at £5.60 for a Tall size and will be accompanied by a cake pop priced at £3.30, adorned with white chocolate and unicorn-themed decorations.
