Billionaire entrepreneur Mike Ashley, known for acquiring struggling businesses, has expressed interest in purchasing upscale retailer Harvey Nichols, which he believes is in a dire situation and faces significant challenges to turn its operations around.
Harvey Nichols, a luxury department store famous for its presence in various cities including London, Leeds, Birmingham, and others, has experienced financial losses in recent years. The company initiated a significant restructuring process two years ago, resulting in job cuts at its headquarters.
Mike Ashley, the founder of Frasers Group, is considering acquiring Harvey Nichols for less than £40 million. He mentioned that if his group succeeds in the acquisition, he plans to maintain the flagship store in London and the Edinburgh store under the Harvey Nichols brand. However, other locations may be rebranded as either House of Fraser or Flannels, both part of the Frasers Group.
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Ashley emphasized the challenges of operating traditional department stores, citing the struggles faced by retailers like John Lewis. Despite his interest in acquiring Harvey Nichols, he highlighted the need to consider potential future losses before finalizing any deal.
Apart from his retail ventures, Ashley also owns Lillywhites, a historic sports store in London, which he purchased in 2002 for £11.5 million.
