A man, Nathan Owen, deliberately crashed into a police car in a bizarre attempt to fake an emergency and write off his own vehicle. The incident occurred on March 6, 2024, in Merseyside. Owen, 33, phoned emergency services claiming his Jaguar was uncontrollably accelerating, leading to a high-speed chase on the M58, M57, and M62 highways, reaching speeds of up to 86mph. However, investigations revealed that Owen was in complete control of the car the entire time.
Owen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and fraud charges, receiving a sentence of four years and three months in prison. The judge criticized his actions, stating that they caused significant disruption and danger to the public and law enforcement officers. It was disclosed that Owen had financial troubles related to the car and attempted to profit from the situation by fabricating the emergency.
The court heard that Owen’s false claims led to the closure of motorways and endangered workers on the road shoulder. Despite his lack of a criminal record, Owen’s actions were described as “frighteningly stupid” by his defense lawyer. After the sentencing, Merseyside Police confirmed that Owen had intentionally put lives at risk with his reckless behavior. Owen was also banned from driving for five years upon his release from prison.
