Robert Bush, a funeral director, has had his bank accounts frozen and assets seized by prosecutors in an effort to recover funds he fraudulently obtained from his numerous victims. Bush, who is now serving a 20-year prison sentence, engaged in deceitful practices at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors for over a decade, betraying the trust of grieving families through various means such as mishandling ashes and scamming vulnerable individuals with fake funeral schemes.
During his recent trial, it was revealed that Bush spent substantial amounts of money on personal expenses like holidays, motorcycle racing, and home improvements, totaling over £80,000 between 2017 and 2024. Financial records showed that £3,076,522 was deposited into his accounts over seven years, shedding light on his lavish spending habits despite the appalling mistreatment of bodies and defrauding of clients.
The Crown Prosecution Service aims to compensate as many victims as possible by taking control of Bush’s finances and assets, as reported by the BBC. Laura Tams KC, deputy chief crown prosecutor, emphasized the need to investigate the financial aspects of the case to potentially confiscate proceeds from Bush’s crimes and provide restitution to affected families.
Ms. Tams highlighted the severity of Bush’s offenses, noting that his actions were not a result of financial hardship but rather a deliberate business model that exploited vulnerable individuals. The prosecution’s primary focus has been on building a strong case to ensure justice for the families impacted by the fraudulent activities of the 48-year-old funeral director.
Prosecutors disclosed that Bush’s extravagant spending on holidays, jewelry, fine dining, and other luxuries contrasted starkly with his claims of financial struggles. Despite owing money for cremations, Bush was found to have allocated significant sums for personal use, including substantial transfers to his wife, indicating a pattern of financial misconduct and disregard for his responsibilities.
One of Bush’s victims described him as transitioning from a “consummate professional” to a menacing figure, illustrating the profound impact of his actions on countless families. The victim expressed hope for justice and closure, reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding the handling of her parents’ remains due to Bush’s unethical practices.
