I am honored to serve as the new Minister for Women and Equalities under Andy Burnham’s administration. This role, dedicated solely to women’s rights and equalities, underscores the significance this Labour government places on these issues.
Currently, there is a critical juncture with conservative politicians seeking to reverse the progress made in women’s rights, coupled with a degrading online discourse that diverges from the values of Britain.
My commitment is unwavering, and in my new capacity, I will strive to propel the nation forward, not backward. Addressing issues like reducing child poverty, combating violence against women and girls, and advocating for equal pay will be at the core of my efforts.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a rape crisis center, where dedicated staff provide essential support to women in need of safety and healing from traumatic experiences.
The Labour Party has pledged to halve violence against women and girls, a promise that I intend to prioritize in my work.
This cause is deeply personal to me, having previously managed a shelter for women and children escaping abuse. I have witnessed firsthand the tangible impact of rights in people’s daily lives, whether ensuring a woman’s safe journey home, a disabled individual’s access to public transport, or fair pay for workers – achievements secured through the relentless efforts of our trade unions.
It has been the responsibility of the Labour Party, as the parliamentary arm of the labor movement, to champion these advancements, resulting in landmark legislation such as the Equal Pay Act 1970, Sex Discrimination Act 1970, Equality Act 2010, and Employment Rights Act 2025.
However, there are voices, like Nigel Farage, advocating for the repeal of equality laws, jeopardizing protections for women, ethnic minorities, and individuals with disabilities, and undermining anti-discrimination measures based on religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
When right-wing figures challenge equality laws, it is crucial to recognize the essence of these laws – safeguarding maternity rights, disability rights, and the hard-won rights that uplift working-class citizens and propel societal progress.
As the Minister for Women and Equalities, I am resolute in preventing any regression by Reform UK. I am not just committed to upholding these rights but also to enhancing and fortifying them further.
Additionally, as the new Chair of the Labour Party, I am eager to engage with people nationwide, including readers of publications like the Mirror, to understand your expectations from the government.
My journey with the Labour Party began in my youth, witnessing the detrimental impact of Conservative policies in the North East. Over time, I have experienced firsthand the positive changes brought about by Labour – stronger labor rights, an improved NHS, and enhanced opportunities for children.
My aim is to revitalize the party, starting with recent victories over Reform and the Greens in Greater Manchester. Together with members and unions, we will build a winning strategy to counter divisive politics and secure another term for Labour.
Andy Burnham has made a strong start as Prime Minister, demonstrating courage in challenging the status quo and instilling hope in many.
For those who resigned to the decline of our nation as inevitable, Labour aims to prove them wrong.
As the summer holidays are underway, Labour’s initiatives include reducing VAT on children’s meals and attractions, offering relief to parents during outings. Upon schools reopening, measures will be implemented to lower uniform costs, expand free breakfast clubs, and extend free school meal access to half a million more children.
