Prince Louis made his debut at a significant sports event today, accompanying the Prince and Princess of Wales and his siblings to watch a Netball match at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The royal family, including Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Louis, were seated together to witness the semi-final clash between Australia and Jamaica.
Kensington Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, as they are known in Scotland, would be present at the penultimate day of the “friendly games” this morning. While the younger royals’ appearances were kept confidential, this outing marked their first public appearance in Scotland.
Known for his playful nature and candid expressions, Prince Louis often attends royal ceremonies like Christmas and Easter services, but his public engagements have been limited. His attendance at the Commonwealth Games today signifies his first major sporting event appearance, unlike his older siblings who frequently accompany their parents to football and tennis matches.
This moment is a significant milestone for Prince Louis, who appeared thrilled to be inside the 5,000-seat Hydro arena for the Women’s Netball semi-final. The royal family was warmly greeted as they anticipated the intense match between Australia and Jamaica, the world’s top team and Birmingham 2022 silver medalists, respectively.
Later in the day, Prince William and Catherine will engage with Team Wales athletes and families. Prior to the games, the future King interacted with Team Wales athletes and visited the London Welsh School in west London.
The royal couple will also meet athletes supported by the charity SportsAid, which Catherine has patronized since 2013, and engage with emerging talent in the Team England Futures project. Notable athletes who received early support from SportsAid include Sir Chris Hoy, Ellie Simmonds, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, and Tom Daley.
The Commonwealth Games, known as “the friendly games,” commenced on July 23 with a grand Opening Ceremony featuring the King and Queen exiting Doctor Who’s Tardis. Members of the royal family have been actively attending various sporting events throughout the nine days of action.
