Eight bikers who made a stop for ice creams at a picturesque location in North Wales have been slapped with fines totaling close to £1,000. The group, hailing from Devon, fell foul of newly installed cameras at Llyn Tegid, Bala, in Eryri National Park, commonly known as Snowdonia, aimed at preventing overnight camping.
Each of the eight motorcyclists is facing two fines of £60 each, amounting to a collective penalty of £960, after halting twice to purchase ice creams before realizing the new parking charges. A member of the group expressed disappointment, mentioning their long-standing tradition of visiting the area without prior knowledge of any parking fees for motorcycles.
The bikers, along with other motorists, are contesting the fines imposed after the introduction of ANPR cameras, expressing skepticism about their chances given the private operator managing the car parks. The situation in Bala has been tumultuous due to increased tourism, leading to enhanced parking facilities at Llyn Tegid, including raised fees and the implementation of ANPR cameras.
Parking fees now stand at £5 for up to four hours, with a daily rate of £8, while motorcyclists are now required to pay £1 for parking in a zone that was previously free. Despite a public outcry, parking bans at nine other Eryri car parks were temporarily halted in response to public backlash, with Bala’s facilities remaining under a pilot scheme.
Residents of Bala have initiated a petition demanding free access to the lake’s car parks, criticizing the increased charges and limited free parking concessions. The petition emphasizes the importance of community access to the area, arguing against the privatization of public spaces and the lack of meaningful consultation with residents on the parking changes.
ENPA has responded to the concerns, highlighting the pilot scheme’s objectives to improve parking management and ensure compliance with fees. The effectiveness of the ANPR system will be evaluated, with feedback and data informing potential revisions. The pilot aims to enhance the visitor experience and support the maintenance of the sites by addressing issues like overnight parking through adjusted operating hours.
