Andy Burnham has criticized Gianni Infantino for his leadership of FIFA amid controversy over plans to sell a share of the World Cup. The Prime Minister denounced the proposal as “outrageous,” prompting FIFA to launch a consultation on establishing a new $20 billion entity called FIFA Forward Enterprise.
Infantino faced further scrutiny when one of his senior advisers, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest against the World Cup stake sale idea. Burnham expressed his growing opposition to the plans, labeling Infantino as unsuitable to lead the organization.
Burnham’s remarks mark the first time a major country’s leader has questioned Infantino’s position. European football associations threatened to boycott future FIFA events, with US Soccer chief Cordeiro criticizing the proposal as detrimental to football’s interests.
Cordeiro, who served as a senior adviser to Infantino, emphasized that FIFA already possesses ample financial resources without needing to sell a stake in the World Cup. UEFA also voiced strong opposition to the plans, asserting that the World Cup is not up for sale and pledging to boycott FIFA competitions unless the proposals are completely abandoned.
The Football Association supported UEFA’s stance, emphasizing that the FIFA World Cup belongs to football and its fans, not wealthy investors. The opposition to the plans extended to other football governing bodies, including the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf, urging FIFA to reconsider its decision-making process.
FIFA defended its position by emphasizing a consultation process to allow member associations to vote based on factual information. The Asian federation called for a review of FIFA’s governance framework to ensure transparent decision-making processes.
