Record-breaking mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja, a former British Marine, had not initially intended to climb Broad Peak. However, he led a 10-person expedition on the world’s 12th-tallest mountain, which tragically ended in an avalanche striking Pakistan’s Broad Peak on Thursday. Among the missing climbers are five Nepalese climbers, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, Omani climber Nadhira, American mountaineer Mallory Geis, Chinese climber Mr. Wang, and another foreign climber.
Rescue operations recovered two bodies believed to be part of the missing team, but their identities remain unconfirmed. Purja, who shared his aspirations on social media just before the incident, expressed his determination to conquer Broad Peak and become the first person to summit all 14 eight-thousanders twice without using oxygen.
Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope as tracking data from Purja’s device shows some movement post-avalanche. However, rescue efforts have been hindered by poor weather conditions, reducing the chances of finding survivors. The Alpine Club of Pakistan and Seven Summit Treks are coordinating search and rescue operations, with plans for a rescue chopper to deploy from Skardu once weather conditions improve.
Purja, known for his remarkable mountaineering achievements, faces challenges beyond the mountains, including allegations of misconduct during expeditions. Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 meters above sea level, poses significant challenges to climbers, being renowned as one of the toughest peaks to conquer.
