Ten climbers are reportedly missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, the world’s 12th highest mountain. The group, led by Nirmal Purja, a Nepali mountaineer and former British Marine, lost contact hours after the avalanche struck on Thursday, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Among the missing are five Nepalese climbers, including Purja, and Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi from Hunza. Major General Irfan Arshad, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, stated that the club is working closely with government officials to aid in the search and rescue efforts. Efforts are being made to dispatch helicopters and relief resources to the affected area promptly.
Standing at an elevation of 8,051 meters (26,414 feet) above sea level, Broad Peak is renowned as one of the most challenging peaks for climbers. Nirmal Purja, also known as Nimsdai, gained fame for completing the ascent of all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just 189 days.
