Some parts of the UK may experience temperatures climbing as high as 36C today with the return of heatwave conditions.
This week marks the fourth occurrence of a heatwave this year, although today’s heat is anticipated to be less widespread compared to the previous three instances.
The GFS weather model indicates potential peak temperatures of 36C in parts of East Anglia and the south-east later today, while much of eastern and south-eastern England could experience highs of 35C.
Data suggests that the Midlands might see temperatures reaching 32-33C, with a possibility of 31C in Yorkshire. Wales could expect highs of 25C, whereas Northern Ireland and Scotland are likely to have cooler temperatures.
Later today, temperature anomaly maps show central, eastern, and southern England highlighted in dark red, indicating temperatures well above the seasonal norm in those regions.
An official heatwave is declared after three consecutive days of temperatures meeting the heatwave threshold, set at 28C around London and decreasing to 25C farther away from the south-east. Therefore, England is the only region expected to experience heatwave conditions this week.
According to the GFS model, 11 counties in England could witness temperatures exceeding 35C today.
The Met Office anticipates that the current hot spell will be brief, with temperatures cooling off towards the weekend. By Friday, temperatures are projected to return closer to the average for most of the UK, slightly below average in the northern regions.
The influence of high pressure will likely keep the far south slightly warmer, but the conditions are expected to be notably different from the midweek highs.
