“Alt-Nets Outshine Major UK Broadband Providers”

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that many of the major UK broadband providers are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. Smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing these big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The study highlights that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are common complaints among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages are also significant sources of frustration for customers.

An overwhelming 91% of broadband users reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households enjoyed trouble-free connectivity.

Among the leading providers, Sky ranked poorly for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue. Virgin Media also performed inadequately, with 30% of users encountering regular connection disruptions despite paying premium prices for their broadband services. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.

Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband service, with nearly one in three reporting that it was not fast enough. TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low scores from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic stood out for their reliability, with significantly fewer issues reported compared to major brands. Plusnet also excelled, outperforming competitors such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

These findings are consistent with previous research by Which?, which consistently shows that smaller broadband providers score higher in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to larger providers in the UK.

Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker tool can help identify available broadband networks easily.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the importance of quality broadband services and urged customers to consider switching to providers that offer better service. Virgin Media defended its performance, highlighting its ongoing investments in improving services and citing positive independent data on its broadband performance.
