A couple has been sentenced following the discovery of cocaine traces in a 12-week-old baby under their care. Kevin Fields, 29, received a two-year prison term, while Ella Jones, 28, was given a suspended two-year sentence after admitting to causing harm to the child.
The case unfolded at Chester Crown Court after a pediatrician alerted the authorities about the baby’s condition. The infant, found unconscious at A&E on May 27, 2025, raised concerns leading to the involvement of the police. Staff at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire, observed the couple’s behavior, indicating possible drug influence and a lack of concern for the child’s well-being.
Tests revealed cocaine in the baby’s system, believed to have caused the unresponsiveness. Fields and Jones were arrested on June 3, confessing to using cocaine around the child. Investigations uncovered drug-related activities on Fields’ phone, including a recent cocaine purchase prior to the baby’s medical emergency.
Jones received a suspended two-year sentence along with rehabilitation activities, mental health treatment, and community service. Fields was sentenced to two years in prison. Following the sentencing, Cheshire Police’s Sergeant Ann Muldowney emphasized the severe health risks associated with Class A drugs and condemned the couple’s negligent actions towards the vulnerable child.
