A member of the US Secret Service and two other individuals are facing allegations of participating in a violent hazing ritual within a fraternity, resulting in severe injuries to two young men.
Marquez Christopher Pinder, aged 29, employed at the Secret Service’s Miami field office, was apprehended along with the other suspects in connection with hazing incidents associated with a Miami branch of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
The victims reportedly endured repeated beatings using canes and paddles over a span of four nights in April, leading to their hospitalization for medical care.
Pinder, who has been serving as a Secret Service agent since 2023, has been charged with hazing involving a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing significant harm, and attempted manslaughter.
Legal documents identify him as the “dean of pledges” for the fraternity chapter. Authorities claim that the assaults occurred at an apartment and an off-campus residence after the prospective members failed to respond correctly to questions about the fraternity and its background.
The arrest warrant for Pinder states that the beatings ceased on the fourth night when one victim’s trousers showed signs of blood. Allegedly, fraternity leaders then instructed the victims to discard their clothing, pack them in garbage bags, and leave.
One of the victims experienced severe pain, vomiting, and fevers before being admitted to the hospital. He underwent skin grafts on his buttocks and received treatment for kidney damage, with medical experts stating that without immediate intervention, he could have faced renal failure leading to death.
The second victim initially denied being paddled, but medical records revealed that he was also hospitalized with severe injuries, necessitating intubation to prevent further deterioration and potential fatality.
Michael Townsend, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Miami office, emphasized a commitment to addressing any misconduct promptly following the investigative and legal processes.
The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity spokesperson did not provide an immediate comment upon request.
Florida classified hazing as a felony in 2005 if it results in serious harm or death. This legislation was enacted following the tragic 2001 death of University of Miami student Chad Meredith, who perished after consuming alcohol and attempting to swim across a lake at the behest of fraternity members.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle underscored that in Florida, hazing constitutes abuse and is criminal, often leading to fatalities or severe injuries.
