The King’s top advisor and most senior assistant has announced his upcoming retirement next year. Sir Clive Alderton, with two decades of service in the Royal Household, currently serving as the principal private secretary to King Charles and Queen Camilla, will be stepping down to coincide with his 60th birthday in May.
Expressing gratitude to his colleagues, Sir Clive stated, “It has been a tremendous honor to support the King and Queen during these historic times with unforgettable moments of humor. I will continue to offer my support in a more informal capacity for the rest of my life.”
Sir Clive has been a prominent figure in the British Royal Household for 20 years, transitioning from a diplomatic career to a senior courtier role. He started as Deputy Private Secretary to Charles in 2006 and later became the Principal Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall before assuming the role of King’s Private Secretary upon Charles’s ascension to the throne.
During his tenure, Sir Clive guided the King through various challenges, including health issues and significant state visits, such as the trip to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington DC. Notably, he played a key role in managing the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from royal duties.
Upon his announcement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that a thorough recruitment process will commence to find a suitable successor, ensuring a smooth transition. The King and Queen expressed their deep appreciation for Sir Clive’s unwavering support and wise counsel over the years.
The selection and handover process for Sir Clive’s replacement is expected to be completed by spring/summer 2027.
