Recent findings have disclosed the most polluted areas in Britain, where some localities are experiencing pollutant levels exceeding the recommended limits by more than four times.
According to data from the Geographic Data Service, a section in Camden, London, encompassing parts of Holborn, St Giles, and Covent Garden, stands out as the most polluted region in the nation. Residents in this area are breathing in an average of nearly 21 micrograms of fine particulate matter and over 34 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide annually.
The World Health Organization advises that levels should not surpass an annual average of five micrograms of PM2.5 and 15 micrograms of NO2. Nonetheless, experts have emphasized that even these thresholds are not entirely “safe,” as pollutants can be detrimental at any concentration.
PM2.5, in particular, poses significant health risks as these minuscule particles can penetrate the body’s natural defenses, reaching deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Exposure to PM2.5 can lead to various health issues such as eye irritation, coughing, breathlessness, and an increased likelihood of lung cancer, respiratory infections, and cardiovascular diseases.
Similarly, exposure to NO2 can cause airway inflammation, trigger asthma episodes, reduce lung function, and elevate the risk of respiratory infections. Shockingly, 99% of neighborhoods in Britain exceeded the recommended levels of PM2.5, and 51% had elevated levels of NO2.
Urban areas are disproportionately affected, showing notably higher levels of both pollutants, with NO2 being particularly prevalent compared to rural regions. The most severely impacted areas in Britain are all situated in London, while data also identifies the regions with the most polluted air in each area.
These locations include a neighborhood in the Stone vicinity of Dartford, Kent; an inner-city area in the Aston Park district of Birmingham; and sections of the North Evington region in Leicester. Other notable hotspots by region comprise parts of Bootle and Seaforth in Sefton, West Thurrock in Essex, the Sheepscars and Lovell Park neighborhoods in Leeds, and a neighborhood in the Splott sector of Cardiff.
Additionally, areas of North Shields in North Tyneside, Upper Montpelier in Bristol, and a neighborhood in the downtown area of Glasgow rank high in pollution levels. Conversely, the regions with the cleanest air are predominantly in secluded, rural parts of Scotland and Wales, while certain areas in Devon in the south and Cumberland and Northumberland in the north of England exhibit notably low air pollution levels.
Jonathan Blades, the head of policy and public affairs at Asthma + Lung UK, expressed concern over the exposure of UK communities to hazardous air pollution, which is associated with up to 43,000 deaths annually in the country.
Blades emphasized the need for updated UK air pollution guidelines that align with World Health Organization standards, urging the Labour Party to support a new Clean Air Act with legally binding air quality objectives and a national awareness campaign to educate people on the health implications of air pollution and ways to minimize exposure.
