Wes Streeting has expressed that had it not been for Andy Burnham’s assurance of forthcoming investment, he would have declined the Defense Secretary position.
Streeting noted the advantage of having his predecessor, John Healey, now overseeing the Treasury, tasked with allocating billions for defense in the upcoming budget.
Speaking to Sky News, Streeting emphasized the importance of confidence in the government’s commitment to defense and security when considering the role. He highlighted his discussions with the Prime Minister before supporting his leadership bid, where he was assured of their dedication to defense.
Anticipating a proactive approach from the Prime Minister, Streeting mentioned upcoming challenges, particularly in tackling defense spending issues.
John Healey, the former Treasury chief, emphasized the priority of defense spending, stressing the government’s duty to safeguard the nation and its citizens. The current UK defense budget is projected to reach 2.7% of GDP by 2029, falling short of the targeted 3%.
Although specific plans for defense spending are yet to be revealed by Streeting’s successor, assurances have been given to honor commitments to international partners. The appointment of John Healey as chancellor is seen as a strong indication of the government’s intentions in this regard.
In his initial budget, Mr. Healey must secure an additional £4.7 billion to fund the Defense Investment Plan (DIP) released at the end of June. This funding requirement necessitates careful consideration in the budgeting process, potentially involving budget adjustments or revenue generation strategies.
