After enduring scorching temperatures and dry conditions, the UK is set to receive some much-needed rainfall this week, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office.
Recent data from the national weather agency revealed that the UK experienced temperatures exceeding 30C for 13 consecutive days, with central and south-east England enduring the longest period without recorded rainfall this century, lasting from July 2 to July 15.
The prolonged dry spell has posed challenges for agriculture and led to wildfires across various parts of the UK. However, relief is on the way as showers are expected in some regions this week.
In the Met Office’s Week Ahead forecast, meteorologist Clare Nasir predicted “patchy rain” in the far north and north-west of Scotland. Northern Ireland may also experience “spits and spots” of rain.
Temperatures in the central belt of Scotland, South Wales, central England, and the south-east are expected to reach 25-26C, offering a contrast to the extreme heat of the previous week.
Looking ahead, Nasir anticipates a weather front bringing “a little showery rain” on the following day, with the far north of Scotland likely to receive 10-15mm of rain across the upslopes towards the north-west.
Thursday is expected to be more humid with additional rain showers, particularly along the east coast. Despite rain in central England, showers are projected to be scattered and light.
Friday’s forecast includes showery bursts of rain in central and northern areas of Scotland, while the rest of the UK can expect a fine day with sunny spells. London may see temperatures reach 28C, with other regions like South Wales, the Midlands, and Yorkshire reaching 24-25C.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office foresees more rain as high pressure weakens, allowing weather fronts to become more active and push southwards. This shift is expected to bring much-needed rain to central and northern parts of the UK that have been exceptionally dry in recent weeks.
