Mexican drug lord Ismael Zambada García, famously known as ‘El Mayo,’ has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States after admitting guilt in trafficking large amounts of cocaine and various drugs as the leader of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.
At the age of 76, Zambada is among the most prominent cartel leaders brought to justice in the U.S. following his confession last year to drug trafficking charges. He played a key role in smuggling tons of cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances into the United States over several years before his 2024 arrest in Texas after being abducted in Mexico.
As a co-founder and head of the Sinaloa cartel, recognized as one of the most lethal and influential drug trafficking syndicates globally, Zambada operated for decades as a top target for U.S. law enforcement. His sentencing in a federal court in Brooklyn marks the conclusion of the U.S. government’s extensive effort to apprehend the elusive cartel co-founder.
Zambada was involved in ordering torture and orchestrating murders while expanding the Sinaloa cartel with co-founder Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán into the largest drug trafficking network globally, saturating the U.S. market, according to prosecutors. Regarded as the cartel’s strategic planner and negotiator, Zambada was more actively engaged in its daily activities compared to the flamboyant Guzmán, who is currently serving a life sentence in the federal Supermax prison in Colorado after his 2019 conviction.
Following prosecutors’ decision not to pursue the death penalty, Zambada pleaded guilty in August 2025. Through a Spanish interpreter, he expressed remorse to those impacted by his actions. Requesting to serve his sentence in a prison hospital due to age-related health complications, Zambada’s defense attorney highlighted his need for ongoing medical care.
During a hearing, federal prosecutors raised concerns about the significant security risks posed by Zambada and suggested that certain facilities may not be suitable for his confinement due to security concerns. While judges typically offer recommendations on inmates’ placements, the final decision rests with the federal Bureau of Prisons.
Prosecutors described Zambada as one of the most influential and prolific drug traffickers globally, emphasizing the extensive reach of his crimes and the detrimental impact of corruption, violence, and suffering in Mexico, the United States, and beyond. Apart from a life sentence, Zambada is also anticipated to face $15 billion in financial penalties, representing the proceeds from the cartel’s criminal activities under his leadership.
