A young woman fell victim to a serial catfisher who stole her identity to deceive men into believing they were in a relationship with the 19-year-old. Sasha-Jay Davies, residing in Aberdare, Wales, had her images appropriated by Elha Mai Weston, a fellow teenager from the same town, who impersonated Sasha-Jay to engage in relationships with men and friendships with women. The ordeal began when Sasha-Jay was 16, as a TikTok account using her photo surfaced.
Despite reporting the issue to the authorities, the deception persisted for almost four years across various platforms such as Tinder, Hinge, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and SoundCloud until legal action was taken to identify the perpetrator. Weston exploited Sasha-Jay’s identity to amass a following of 100,000 between 2022 and 2026, initiating romantic dialogues with strangers online, even after receiving reports about the catfishing activities on different platforms.
Some of these fake accounts misled men into believing they were romantically involved with Sasha-Jay, causing her to fear venturing outside after being confronted in real life. The victim experienced anxiety when strangers stared at her in public, worried they might have been deceived by Weston into thinking they had a relationship with her. In one incident, a man approached Sasha-Jay, thinking they were in a serious relationship after engaging with one of Weston’s fake profiles for months.
Despite prior attempts to seek help from the police, it was only after appearing on a television program that most of the fraudulent accounts were removed. Identified by Sasha’s legal representatives, Weston admitted fault and apologized in court, leading to a £10,000 compensation settlement. Weston’s sustained impersonation campaign involved multiple fake accounts using Sasha-Jay’s images under aliases like “Sophie” and “Sophie Kadare”.
The court learned that AI-generated images resembling Sasha-Jay were also utilized, and following an investigation, Weston acknowledged her actions and agreed to compensate Davies for the distress caused. The court was informed that Weston expressed deep remorse and issued a wholehearted apology to Sasha Davies for the distress she endured. The agreement includes a prohibition on repeating such behavior in the future, with potential legal consequences for non-compliance.
Sasha’s legal counsel emphasized the impact of the prolonged online impersonation, highlighting the distress caused to the victim. They stressed the importance of holding individuals accountable for online abuse, emphasizing that anonymity should not shield perpetrators from legal repercussions. The legal team intends to involve law enforcement in further investigations to address the issue.
This development marks a step towards justice for Sasha-Jay, signaling a potential shift in combating online deception and harassment.
