Mother Seeks Justice for Daughter in Assault Tragedy

Yolanda Ramos, the mother of a young woman who chose euthanasia following a suicide attempt, is seeking justice for her daughter by initiating efforts to identify the individuals responsible for reportedly assaulting her. Noelia Castillo Ramos tragically passed away at the age of 25 on March 26 in a care facility in Barcelona, having lost mobility in her legs due to her suicide attempt in 2022.

Ramos has lodged two formal complaints with prosecutors in Barcelona and Tarragona to trigger investigations into the alleged sexual assaults on Noelia. The Daily Mail reported that Ramos uncovered new evidence of the assaults in her daughter’s diary, given to her on the day of Noelia’s passing.

In the diary, Noelia detailed being sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend and disclosed being drugged, intoxicated, and raped by three men in Salou, a well-known beach destination. Ramos, in announcing the complaints, mentioned that Noelia had openly discussed the assaults on television and shared her diary with her on the day she died, shedding light on the extent of her suffering.

Following the traumatic incidents, Noelia attempted to end her life, resulting in her becoming paraplegic. Subsequently, her profound emotional distress led her to seek euthanasia. Despite her family’s objections, including legal challenges from her father in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers, Noelia’s request for euthanasia was eventually approved by a panel of experts in 2024 after several legal battles, including appeals to the Spanish Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights, which were unsuccessful.

Noelia’s case, the first of its kind to go to court in Catalonia since euthanasia was legalized five years ago under stringent regulations, has sparked controversy in Spain. The Christian Lawyers have launched a petition to abolish the euthanasia laws, labeling them as a ‘complete failure’.

Noelia passed away on March 26 at the age of 25. For individuals in distress, the Samaritans operate a free helpline accessible 24/7 at 116 123 for support.
