Police in Porthleven, Cornwall, are conducting an investigation following an incident where a man reportedly assaulted a seagull, resulting in the bird sustaining broken wings. The altercation occurred at the Harbour View Café, with witnesses stating that the man attacked the seagull after it tried to snatch his food, ultimately causing it harm.
According to eyewitnesses, the man aggressively struck the seagull against the café wall before pushing it through a fence, leaving the bird severely injured with two broken wings. Shocked onlookers, including children, were disturbed by the violent act.
Authorities from Devon and Cornwall Police are urging individuals who may have footage or information related to the incident to come forward. The police spokesperson confirmed that they are investigating the matter after receiving reports of the seagull being harmed by the man at the harbour on Monday, July 13.
It is important to note that seagulls, as wild birds, are protected by law. The RSPCA emphasizes that intentionally harming gulls, their chicks, or nests is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Certain species of gulls, such as herring gulls and kittiwakes, are listed on the UK Red List due to declining populations, highlighting the significance of their conservation.
