Former MP Patrick Spencer Faces Groping Allegations

Former Conservative Member of Parliament Patrick Spencer is facing accusations of groping two women at London’s Groucho club in August 2023. The alleged victims described Spencer as being persistent in his advances before grabbing their breasts. One woman testified that Spencer engaged her in conversation and attempted to buy her a drink before touching her breasts from behind, leaving her shocked and wanting to leave. The second victim stated that Spencer cupped her breasts forcefully, causing her to freeze momentarily before pushing his hands away.

During the trial at Southwark Crown Court, one of the women detailed how Spencer approached her at the bar, insisting she try a cocktail despite her repeated refusals. She felt uncomfortable and invaded when he inquired about her marital status, prompting her to move away. The woman recounted feeling pressured to drink the cocktail and eventually being followed by Spencer into an alcove where the assault took place.

Spencer, who was stripped of his Conservative Party membership following the allegations, denies the charges, claiming he did not touch either woman inappropriately. The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident, capturing Spencer’s interactions with the women. The prosecution highlighted Spencer’s allegedly unsteady behavior and slurred speech, while the defense argued that the physical contact was minimal.

Despite Spencer’s defense of being overly friendly, the women maintained that the groping incidents did occur. The trial is ongoing as both parties present their evidence and testimonies. Spencer, a former MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, faces two counts of sexual assault in this case.
