A tragic incident occurred in Thailand as a bar in the Chatuchak District of Bangkok was engulfed in a massive fire, claiming the lives of numerous individuals. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the recovery of 27 bodies at the scene following reports of the fire around midnight.
The bar, known locally as Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, was a popular establishment in the area. Eyewitnesses observed a group of people outside the bar moments before thick smoke and flames suddenly emerged from the building, prompting a chaotic rush to escape.
First responders faced a challenging task as a fierce blaze erupted from the bar’s entrance, leading to a frantic evacuation with thick black smoke filling the sky. Firefighters from multiple stations, including Phaholyothin, Phaya Thai, and Huai Khwang, utilized three water hoses to combat the flames, eventually gaining control after approximately half an hour of intense firefighting efforts.
Tragically, one individual was initially found with burn injuries, hinting at the severity of the situation with potentially more trapped inside. Some victims reportedly sought refuge in the bar’s toilets but tragically succumbed to the flames.
This devastating incident adds to a history of similar tragedies in Thailand, with a previous fire in 2022 claiming 14 lives at a music bar in the eastern region. Additionally, a decade earlier in 2009, a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok resulted in 66 fatalities and over 200 injuries due to a fire sparked by an indoor fireworks display.
