“MPs Urged to Enact Stricter Campaign Finance Rules”

Ministers have been cautioned about the urgent need for stringent new regulations on campaign finances and contributions to address the escalating political competition. MPs are set to propose restrictions on donor contributions, a prohibition on lawmakers holding second jobs, and legislation to prevent companies funding ruling parties from securing government contracts. A report reveals that more than 80% of voters believe affluent individuals are leveraging donations to promote their personal agendas.

Former Labour chair Dame Anneliese Dodds, writing for The Mirror, emphasized the current regulatory framework facilitates an uncontrolled escalation in political financing. She stressed the necessity for immediate action, citing a decline in public trust towards politics and institutions. Dame Anneliese has proposed an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, advocating for a substantial reduction in the national campaign spending cap.

Additionally, the Autonomy Institute has recommended imposing a £20,000 limit on political donations to enhance transparency and integrity in politics. Dr. Will Stronge, the institute’s chief executive, highlighted the widespread public support for donation caps, emphasizing the perception that monetary contributions grant undue influence in political circles.

Labour backbencher Neil Duncan-Jordan underscored the power dynamics influenced by financial backing, emphasizing the need to level the playing field by restricting donations. Recent data reveals substantial donations to Reform UK and major political parties, prompting calls for tighter regulations to safeguard against external interference in British politics.

Proposed amendments to the Representation of the People Bill aim to reinforce donation restrictions and empower the Electoral Commission to enforce compliance rigorously. MPs are rallying behind various proposals to curb the influence of money in politics, signaling a collective effort to uphold the integrity of democratic processes.
