“Financial Expert Urges: Get Your Free GHIC for European Travel”

Traveling to Europe this summer? Before you embark on your journey, financial expert Martin Lewis advises that every vacationer should have a particular card in their possession that could lead to significant savings.

Lewis emphasizes the importance of obtaining the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) as a precaution for any emergencies that may arise while abroad. The GHIC allows access to state healthcare in numerous European countries; however, Lewis underscores that it should not replace traditional travel insurance.

During the National Money Assembly at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Lewis urged individuals heading to Europe to secure a GHIC before departing the UK. He highlighted that the card is completely free and cautioned against paying any third-party websites for the application process.

“If you’re traveling to Europe, be sure to obtain your GHIC card, your Global Health Insurance Card,” Lewis emphasized. “This card grants you treatment at a state-run hospital in a European Union country or equivalent at no additional cost—mirroring the local residents’ healthcare access.”

Highlighting the coverage provided by the GHIC, the NHS states that it includes essential healthcare services during temporary stays in the EU and select other countries but does not extend to private medical treatments, mountain rescue, repatriation to the UK, or expenses related to lost or stolen belongings.

Despite the GHIC’s benefits, Lewis advises against solely relying on it. He stresses the importance of securing travel insurance as soon as vacation plans are confirmed, as it offers protection in various scenarios both before and during the trip.

Lewis recommends a basic travel insurance plan for a young traveler spending a week in Europe, which can often be obtained for as little as £7 to £10. His steadfast advice is to adhere to the “ASAB” rule when purchasing travel insurance—acquire it as soon as the holiday is booked to safeguard against unforeseen cancellations due to illness, injury, or other unexpected events.

Applications for a GHIC can be submitted at no cost through the official NHS website, with online application options available for most individuals. Lewis cautions against using websites that charge fees for the service, as the GHIC itself is provided free of charge.
