The recent release of state records has unveiled that the mother of 16 children rescued from appalling living conditions had previously given birth to conjoined twins.
An investigation led to the removal of 16 children from a deteriorating property where they were reportedly enduring conditions worse than livestock. Authorities in the US have labeled the situation as an ‘intrafamily’ matter, hinting at potential incestuous relationships within the family leading to some of the children’s births.
The children, ranging from 18 months to 18 years old, were described by officials as resembling “feral animals.” Four adults, identified as Gary Siders Jr, Gary Siders Sr, Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, suspected to be the parents and grandparents, are now facing legal repercussions.
According to Prosecutor William Archer, the caregivers caused severe physical harm to the children. Additional records show that Elizabeth Siders gave birth to conjoined twins, Bailey Lee and Faith Lee Siders, who tragically passed away shortly after birth due to a rare condition known as thoracopagus.
Upon discovery, law enforcement found the children living in deplorable conditions for four years, which were described as “pure evil” by Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson. The children’s state was deemed unimaginable by Wilson, highlighting the trauma they endured.
Two parents and two grandparents are each facing 17 charges of endangering children as secondary felonies. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain expressed shock at the situation, comparing the children’s living conditions unfavorably to that of livestock.
Seven children were transferred to hospitals in Columbus, with two requiring emergency airlifts. Wilson confirmed that one child remained in critical condition, while the others were receiving medical care.
Officials prioritized the children’s physical well-being and acknowledged the psychological impact of their experiences. While the exact family relationships among the children were undisclosed, authorities clarified that the case did not involve human trafficking.
The suspects had no local ties, with investigators suspecting they frequently moved to avoid leaving records. Wilson stated, “These folks were adept at concealing these children,” while Archer emphasized the need for better care for children and vowed to prosecute the individuals involved.
The accused individuals appeared in court and are detained on bail. The investigation is looking into the family’s movements across Ohio counties since 2008 and any interactions with child services.
The distressing discovery took place in the small town of Hamden, situated about 60 miles southeast of Columbus.
