Britons may experience multiple heatwaves this year, with a “three-month summer sizzler” on the horizon. The UK has already entered its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 35C this week. The Met Office has forecasted that the upcoming heatwave will bring abundant sunshine and gentle winds to many southern regions. There is a possibility of breaking the all-time temperature record of 40.3C in the coming weeks.
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, mentioned that heatwaves are likely to recur over the next few months due to the ample summer duration, including the traditionally warm month of September. On Monday, the mercury soared to 34C in Teddington, southwest London, with temperatures expected to rise further throughout the week, making the East of England the warmest region by Thursday and Friday.
Dale highlighted the influence of climate change and a strong El Niño phenomenon on the current weather patterns. He emphasized that rising sea temperatures, combined with these factors, are likely to keep the UK and much of the northern hemisphere experiencing prolonged heat spells.
The Met Office confirmed that the Southeast of England has officially met the heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 28C. Forecasts suggest that temperatures will continue to climb across the UK, potentially surpassing local heatwave thresholds in various regions.
Steven Keates, the Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, advised the public to take precautions against the high UV levels and soaring temperatures. Pollen levels are expected to remain very high across the UK, with hayfever sufferers urged to take extra measures to reduce exposure, such as frequent showers to minimize pollen contact.
As temperatures surge, it is essential for individuals to stay informed and take necessary steps to stay safe during the ongoing heatwave conditions.
