A past resident alerted authorities about murderer Jamie Varley for attempting to set her children’s toys on fire by throwing lit cigarettes at them. Varley, 37, is currently serving a whole-life sentence for the murder and sexual abuse of his adopted 13-month-old son, Preston Davey. Preston suffered two sexual assaults on the day of his tragic death at the hands of Varley, who was a former secondary school teacher. Varley’s former partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years for his involvement in the abuse.
Recently, a former neighbor shared her distressing experiences living next to Varley’s family. She mentioned reporting Varley for anti-social behavior and criminal damage but claimed he was never apprehended. The neighbor, a mother of five who had fostered numerous children, expressed fear for her kids’ safety due to Varley’s actions. She recalled Varley hurling lit cigarettes at their toys in an attempt to ignite them, leading her to restrict her children from playing in front of their home without her supervision.
The neighbor’s account sheds light on Varley’s troublesome behavior before Preston’s murder. Varley reportedly suffered a back injury during the Covid lockdown while allegedly spying on a suspected unfaithful boyfriend. Following Varley’s sentencing at Preston Crown Court, he was added to the list of Britain’s most dangerous criminals serving life imprisonment, joining notorious offenders like Wayne Couzens, Levi Bellfield, and Jeremy Bamber.
Preston Davey, born to convicted murderer Sarah Davey, was placed in the care of Oldham Council shortly after his birth. Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley became his adoptive parents in January 2023, and Preston moved in with them in Blackpool in April of the same year. Over time, Preston endured escalating abuse at the hands of Varley, with McGowan-Fazakerley turning a blind eye. The fatal attack on Preston occurred on July 23, 2023, and four days later, he was pronounced dead at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
