A massive illegal waste dump weighing 7,500 tonnes has been uncovered near a football stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Drone footage revealed extensive piles of household and commercial garbage spread out over a land strip close to Valley Parade. The waste, which covered about half the length of a football pitch, included numerous black bin bags, towering heaps of rubbish, and abandoned containers. Additionally, an articulated lorry was spotted at the scene.
The unlawful dump, spanning a 50-meter strip opposite Bradford City FC’s stadium, triggered concerns among residents as a foul odor permeated the area during the recent heatwave. This prompted some locals to keep their windows and doors shut. The Environment Agency (EA) has initiated an investigation into the matter, aiming to identify the individuals responsible for this environmental violation.
An anonymous resident disclosed observing suspicious trucks entering the site during early mornings and evenings. They recounted the overpowering stench of decaying waste during the heatwave, which led to the discovery of the illegal dumping activity. The resident mentioned witnessing an excavator handling large waste bags within the enclosed area.
Manningham’s Independent councillors expressed deep dismay over the incident, condemning it as a severe affront to the community and the environment. They emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal waste dumping in Manningham, urging for the accountability of those involved. Following residents’ complaints, the councillors promptly reported the issue to the Environment Agency, highlighting the potential organized nature of the dumping operation.
The Environment Agency confirmed receiving reports on July 1, estimating the disposal of multiple tonnes of mixed household and commercial waste. Collaborating with local authorities, including Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police, the agency is actively pursuing leads to apprehend the culprits and secure the site properly. Ben Hocking, the agency’s area environment manager, affirmed their commitment to combatting waste crime and safeguarding communities from its detrimental effects.
Councillor Ian Walker from Bradford Council acknowledged the ongoing investigation led by the Environment Agency and assured the council’s full cooperation in supporting the inquiry. The council, being aware of the situation, is aligned with efforts to address and rectify the illegal waste dumping incident swiftly.
