“UK Slaps Sanctions on Russians for Chemical Weapons Use”

Britain has imposed significant sanctions on nine Russian individuals and entities for their involvement in producing chemical weapons used against opposition leader Alexei Navalny and former spy Sergei Skripal. The Foreign Office officials revealed the sanctions against seven individuals and two scientific organizations responsible for creating the toxins Epibatidine and Novichok, which were used in attacks on Navalny and Skripal in 2018. The 2018 Novichok attack in Salisbury resulted in serious illness for Skripal and his daughter Yulia, as well as the death of Dawn Sturgess.

Navalny, who died in a Siberian penal colony two years ago, was exposed to a lethal toxin called epibatidine, derived from poison dart frogs in South America. He had previously been poisoned with a substance similar to Novichok, the same nerve agent responsible for the death of Dawn Sturgess, who fell ill on a flight. Despite being taken out of Russia for medical treatment and subsequently jailed upon his return, Navalny’s case garnered international attention.

The sanctions imposed by the UK include asset freezes and travel bans on the individuals and organizations involved, such as the Russian state scientific research institutes SC Signal and GNIII VM. The Foreign Secretary condemned Russia’s repeated use of chemical weapons as a violation of international law and a threat to global security.

The UK, along with NATO allies, seeks to address the ongoing challenges posed by Russia’s aggressive actions, including the invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions target key individuals involved in the research and testing of toxic substances, aiming to hold them accountable for their roles in these crimes. Over 3,400 individuals and entities have been sanctioned by the UK in response to Russia’s aggressive behavior, demonstrating a commitment to combatting hostile activities.
