Flames have broken out in close proximity to the primary airport in Majorca, accompanied by loud explosions and billowing smoke above the runway.
Palma de Mallorca Airport is currently on “pre-alert” due to the nearby fire, which could potentially disrupt flights to and from the popular holiday destination favored by British tourists.
Witnesses have captured images of thick black smoke rising from the airport, visible for miles around, prompting residents in the smoke path to stay indoors for safety.
Emergency responders, including the National Police and the Palma Fire Brigade, are on-site working to contain the flames. Two firefighters have received treatment for smoke inhalation as the fire, believed to have originated at the Mercapalma main food storage facility, has also spread to parked vehicles, making extinguishing difficult due to the high fuel content.
The Flightradar website indicates that 257 flights are currently delayed at Palma de Mallorca Airport. However, as of now, no official information regarding the fire has been released on the airport’s website or social media platforms.
A spokesperson from Aena, the company managing Palma de Mallorca Airport, informed the Mirror that operations are not impacted at the moment.
