A prisoner, Michael Stone, who is currently serving life sentences for the murders of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan, is undergoing a new round of DNA testing in an effort to identify a potential new suspect and establish his absence from the crime scene. The upcoming DNA analysis, including saliva sampling, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the tragic events that occurred in July 1996.
Stone has persistently requested fresh DNA examinations utilizing advanced techniques that can now segregate male DNA from mixed samples. If any new male DNA is detected, it may be compared to that of Levi Bellfield, a convicted serial killer who previously admitted to being the actual perpetrator behind the double murders.
The investigation is focusing on various crucial pieces of evidence, such as bloodstained items and tapings from the victims’ bodies, which have not been reexamined since the initial testing in 1996. Notably, certain exhibits, including a blood-stained plimsoll lace and a plastic lunchbox with a bloody fingerprint, have either gone missing or been contaminated over the years.
Stone’s legal team believes that the identification of another individual’s DNA could lead to the discovery of a new suspect in the case. The new DNA testing methods, including DNA-17 and Y-STR, are being employed to isolate and analyze genetic material with a high degree of accuracy, aiming to exclude Stone or Lin Russell’s husband as potential sources of the unidentified DNA.
The potential breakthrough in the case relies on the results of the ongoing DNA analysis, which could potentially exonerate Stone and shed light on the true perpetrator behind the tragic murders.
