“Bland British Anthem Sparks Calls for Change”

There is a noticeable trend of criticism directed at this nation from various sources. Whether it’s MAGA supporters painting a grim picture of a lawless society or Europeans poking fun at the regrets over Brexit, the country seems to be an easy target for negative commentary.

Despite being the birthplace of one of the greatest games celebrated worldwide, our national reputation doesn’t seem to reflect this achievement. The rendition of our national anthem, which precedes every game of the Three Lions, is widely regarded as one of the least inspiring anthems globally.

In light of the expanded World Cup event this year, the anthem now stands out as one of the least impressive among the 48 competing nations. The New York Times’ Athletic website even ranked “God Save The King” as the lowest among all 48 World Cup anthems.

While other countries boast anthems that evoke pride and passion, our anthem falls short with its lackluster lyrics and outdated themes. A significant portion of the population questions the relevance of an anthem that references monarchy and religion, concepts that many no longer support.

Calls for a new anthem have surfaced, with suggestions ranging from Billy Bragg’s “A New England” to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” as more fitting alternatives. The idea of transitioning to an anthem like “God Save The Queen” by the Sex Pistols or “Eton Rifles” by The Jam has also been proposed to capture a more contemporary and relevant national sentiment.

In the realm of classical options, William Blake’s “Jerusalem” has been put forward as a powerful anthem critiquing capitalist greed. However, the consensus leans towards a beloved and well-known tune that embodies the British traits of cynicism, pessimism, and stoicism, such as Eric Idle’s “Always Look On the Bright Side Of Life.”

This choice not only encapsulates the national character but also resonates with the challenges and ups and downs of supporting England during international tournaments. The hope is to find an anthem that truly reflects the spirit and sentiments of the nation in a more meaningful and inclusive way.
