Labour General Secretary Hollie Ridley to Step Down Post-Party Conference

Labour’s innovative general secretary, Hollie Ridley, has declared her intention to step down from her position following the party’s annual conference in the fall. Ms. Ridley, a close associate of Keir Starmer and hailed as a significant figure within the Labour Party, informed party personnel of her decision for personal reasons.

During the announcement, she expressed her commitment to fully support the forthcoming Leader of the Party and Prime Minister as they strive to advance the essential work of change and secure a pivotal second term in government. Ms. Ridley emphasized that stepping aside was the right choice to enable the National Executive Committee (NEC) to select a new General Secretary to collaborate with the incoming leader.

This development follows Mr. Starmer’s previous declaration of his resignation as Labour leader and Prime Minister, with Andy Burnham, the uncontested candidate, widely anticipated to succeed him on July 20. Ms. Ridley, who boasts a 16-year tenure within the party and assumed the general secretary role in 2024 after overseeing Labour’s field operations in the general election, has received accolades from various party figures for her contributions.

Acknowledging Ms. Ridley’s accomplishments, Mr. Starmer praised her as an exceptional campaigner who ascended to the pinnacle of the party through dedication and belief in Labour’s mission to empower working individuals. He lauded her instrumental role in the party’s electoral success and transformation efforts, expressing gratitude for her service and wishing her success in future endeavors.

Labour chair Anna Turley lauded Ms. Ridley as a pioneering advocate highly esteemed by party members and the broader movement, highlighting her determination and support for the advancement of working-class women. Additionally, top Labour Cabinet minister Pat McFadden commended Ms. Ridley as a standout figure within the party, underscoring her pivotal role in the 2024 General Election victory.

Born and raised in Dagenham, Ms. Ridley embarked on her party career as a trainee organizer in 2011, eventually assuming leadership roles and championing opportunities for women within Labour. In a reflective meeting with staff, she shared her journey from facing skepticism about her political ambitions to becoming a key figure in Labour’s resurgence, underscoring her pride in contributing to the party’s return to government.
