Urgent Recall: PEDIGREE Dog Food Poses Safety Risk

Dog owners are advised to contact their veterinarian if they have given their dogs a popular brand of dog food following an urgent recall notice for the product. Mars Petcare has recalled two batches of its PEDIGREEĀ® Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck flavored dog food due to potential safety issues. The company, which owns Pedigree, stated that the recalled dog food did not meet their strict safety and quality standards and may contain fragments of metal, plastic, and other foreign materials.

According to a spokesperson from Mars, the affected lots of dog food were supposed to be destroyed by a third-party vendor as part of the quality control process. However, it was later discovered that the products were fraudulently diverted and sold in the United States. The presence of sharp metal and plastic foreign objects in the cans could pose a danger to dogs, leading to risks such as choking, lacerations, or gastrointestinal blockages if ingested.

Consumers who have fed the recalled product to their dogs and are worried should seek advice from their veterinarian. Mars Petcare US is collaborating with authorities to investigate how the contaminated canned goods entered the market when they were deemed unsuitable for sale.

The company is committed to safeguarding pets and assisting consumers in identifying and removing the affected products from use. To date, there have been no reports of pet illness or injury related to this issue. The recall only affects two specific lot codes sold in the United States. Customers who have purchased the recalled canned dog food are urged not to use it and can contact PEDIGREE for a replacement product. No other PEDIGREE or Mars Petcare US, Inc. products are part of the recall.
