Tragedy struck as a house fire in North Tyneside claimed the lives of a man and a woman.
The fire erupted at a residence on Cragside Avenue in North Shields, prompting a swift response from fire crews around 3.30am. While efforts were made to rescue occupants, two individuals perished in the blaze.
Authorities reported that emergency services found a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s within the premises, but despite medical attention, they succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Another man in his 70s was located inside the house and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
As a precautionary measure, two adjacent properties were evacuated, and a safety cordon remains in effect as of today.
In an official statement, Northumbria Police confirmed the tragic incident, stating, “Following a report of a fire at a residence on Cragside Avenue in North Shields, two individuals have tragically lost their lives. Despite immediate response efforts, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s could not be saved. Their families have been informed.”
Detective Inspector Barry McAtominey, the Senior Investigating Officer, expressed condolences, calling it a devastating event and emphasized the ongoing efforts to determine the cause. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service provided details of the emergency response, confirming the deployment of multiple fire crews to extinguish the blaze and rescue individuals from the affected property.
Medical assistance was also swiftly provided by the North East Ambulance Service, with one individual being taken to the hospital for further treatment.
