“Tragic Bungee Jumping Accident Claims Teen Lives”

Two teenagers tragically lost their lives in a bungee jumping accident while their parents witnessed the horrifying event unfold. The incident took place at the Beach Bungee attraction on the Grand Strand in the North Myrtle Beach/Atlantic Beach area of South Carolina in the United States.

The victims were identified as 17-year-old Zachary Steinke and 19-year-old Michael Nash, who worked as a “bungee jump master” at the attraction. The Beach Bungee setup featured a 175-foot-tall archway that elevated visitors in a cage resembling a lift.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the teenagers were lifted to a height of 150 to 160 feet inside the steel jump cage, unaware that the original chain-driven lifting mechanism was malfunctioning. Instead of replacing the faulty system with a similar one, the owners of Beach Bungee opted for a makeshift commercial shrimping setup using a wire rope, which proved to be inadequate for the task.

The substandard system failed during the rainy evening of August 10, 1993, leading to the wire rope snapping under the strain. As a result, the cage plummeted to the ground from a height of 150 feet, causing fatal injuries to both teenagers. Zachary’s parents, who were present at the scene, witnessed the tragic event and reportedly attempted to administer CPR.

Following the incident, a legal battle unfolded, with attorney John Kassel representing the families of the victims. Kassel explained that the cable snapped due to a lack of safety mechanisms in the bungee jump winch system, leading to the tragic outcome. In a federal court case against the owners of Beach Bungee, Kassel successfully secured a $12 million judgment for the families in 1995.

Furthermore, Kassel pursued a case against the South Carolina Department of Labor in state court, overcoming legal hurdles to secure a $2 million verdict, which was upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court. The court held the individual owners of Beach Bungee personally liable for bypassing safety measures in favor of maintaining summer tourist business.

The legal battles shed light on the importance of adhering to safety regulations in the operation of thrill-seeking attractions to prevent tragic incidents like the one that claimed the lives of Zachary Steinke and Michael Nash.
