Drug-related crimes have seen a significant increase nationwide, with specific regions emerging as hotspots for serious issues, as per recent data analysis. While many crime categories have seen a decline over the past year, drug-related offenses have spiked by 18%, surpassing 230,000 documented incidents involving drug trafficking and distribution, often associated with criminal syndicates. The Home Office data highlights urban areas, particularly in the North, as the epicenter of drug-related criminal activities.
Notably, certain cities report over 20 drug-related crimes daily, with some incidents turning violent, including brutal drug-related killings carried out by criminal gangs. Liverpool, for instance, reported 7,770 drug crimes in 2025, marking a 19% surge from the previous year, the highest number recorded in England and Wales. This translates to more than 20 drug crimes per day or a crime occurring approximately every 68 minutes.
In Liverpool, the escalation of violence, such as two shootings in the Toxteth area in June, underscores the ongoing turf wars between rival gangs. Tragic incidents like the killing of 19-year-old Ellis Cox near the Liverpool Loop Line two years ago highlight the lethal consequences of gang conflicts tied to street-level drug activities.
Outside Liverpool, other major cities also witnessed spikes in drug crimes, including 6,631 cases in Manchester (a 31% rise), 4,680 in Birmingham (up by 23%), and 3,114 in Leeds (a 7% increase). Liverpool topped the charts with the highest drug crime rate, recording 15 offenses for every 1,000 residents, followed by Westminster, Manchester, Islington, and Knowsley, each with varying crime rates per 1,000 residents.
The surge in drug-related offenses has prompted law enforcement to intensify efforts in combating criminal activities, particularly targeting county lines gangs and disrupting drug supply chains. The implementation of the “Clear Hold Build” framework, aimed at tackling serious organized crime at the community level, has shown promising results nationally, with significant arrests, charges, and convictions reported.
Deputy Chief Constable Gunney, the National Serious Organized Crime lead, emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of organized criminal activities to curb associated crimes like violence and theft effectively. The collaborative efforts between specialized crime units and local policing teams under the CHB framework have proven instrumental in identifying and investigating criminal patterns, ultimately leading to positive changes in affected communities.
