Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has expressed willingness to accept additional donations from his billionaire supporter, Christopher Harborne, despite facing scrutiny from Parliament’s standards commissioner.
Critics have raised concerns about Farage not disclosing a £5 million contribution from the crypto billionaire before the 2024 General Election. Harborne, a British-Thai cryptocurrency tycoon, recently registered to vote in the UK, a move welcomed by Farage.
Before announcing his candidacy for MP, Harborne gifted £5 million to Farage in the lead-up to the 2024 General Election. Subsequently, he has contributed over £25 million to Reform UK.
During a recent rally, when questioned about accepting further donations from Harborne amid the ongoing investigation, Farage affirmed the party’s readiness to do so. He expressed satisfaction that Harborne had re-registered in the UK.
The investigation is focused on whether Farage violated House of Commons regulations mandating disclosure of gifts or donations received by newly elected MPs within 12 months before their election. Farage has provided various justifications for accepting the gift, including citing security concerns, describing it as a personal matter unrelated to politics, and suggesting it as a reward for his Brexit advocacy.
Farage has defended his right to spend the gift as he sees fit, dismissing public interest in its usage. He has asserted that the gift’s revelation was due to a breach of his phone security by Russian hackers, though no evidence supporting this claim has been presented.
In interviews, Farage has rebuffed inquiries into the gift’s details, emphasizing its unconditional nature. He maintains that the matter is private and has questioned the relevance of the investigation into his finances.
Anna Turley, chair of the Labour Party, criticized Farage for changing his explanations regarding the £5 million gift, urging him to be transparent and address the questions raised.
